Denia – Spanish Holiday Resort on the Rise Author: Dec 31

The Northern Costa Blanca in Spain is among the most popular holiday destinations for UK tourists. The popular areas are the beach resorts, but an ever-increasing band of holiday makers are heading for the golf courses, and Denia is able to offer both types of holiday. The town sits at the foot of the Montgo Mountain with holiday villas lining its lower slopes with stunning views over Denia and out to sea. Many of these are available to rent and make an excellent base for a self-catering holiday.

The closest golf course to Denia is the 18 hole La Sella course, set in the grounds of the Denia Marriott Hotel. A little further up the coast towards Valencia is the Oliva Nova Golf Course that was designed by Spain??s famous golfer Seve Ballesteros. There is also the Javea Golf Club, Ifach Golf Course near Calpe, and the Club de Golf Don Cayo near Altea, all within an hour??s drive of Denia.

Denia itself has 20km of beach, which means that you can have a beach holiday in Spain without having to worry about overcrowding. Beach bars and restaurants are always close by with prices ranging from low budget to high class and with summer temperatures that can reach the 40 degree mark, the beach bars are very handy.

Many of the car rentals companies have offices in Denia, so you can explore the local countryside or visit one of the golf courses. If you want to try going further a field, you can take a boat trip to one of the other Costa Blanca resorts such as Javea, Calpe, Altea or Benidorm. Denia also boasts a large port with ferries going to Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera which lie in the Mediterranean just off Denia, and can be seen from the San Antoni Lighthouse that sits on a headland between Denia and Javea.

Getting to and from Alicante could not be easier from Denia as the Railway Station is built next to the port with regular services to Alicante via Benissa, Calpe, Altea and Benidorm.

Directly opposite the port is the main shopping area of Denia. The longest and most well-known of the shopping streets is the tree lined ??Marques de Campo? that ends in a large square. This area often forms the centre of the local fiestas. It is easy to spend an entire day exploring the department stores and side streets, and relaxing in the many bars and cafes.

The whole of Denia is overlooked by the Castle. It was built in the 11th and 12th centuries and includes the Church of the Assumption and a number of interesting museums, as well as wonderful views over the sea and the countryside and towns close to Denia.

With so much to offer Denia is becoming more popular because of its large beaches, excellent shopping, regular train service to Alicante, ferry links to many other towns both on mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, and recreational facilities such as the local golf courses.

Africa safaris holidays and especially family beach holiday are a once in a life time travel encounter to remember. Be gentle with coral – Avoid touching coral while scuba diving or snorkeling because coral is a living thing. Also be careful with your flippers because one careless swipe of sand can easily suffocate a patch of coral. Avoid buying or collecting marine souvenirs – The collection of seashells whether habited or not can be damaging as it deprives another creature that relies on it of a home. The hermit crab for example lives in seashells.

Avoid all-inclusive beach resort and hotels whenever possible – Some all inclusive resorts and hotel villas even though providing travelers with pretty much everything from food, entertainment and including souvenir shops, the sheer scale of such resorts can be a problem for the often delicate marine environment. Some of these all inclusive resorts are even fenced off from the outside world not to mention that they are sometimes situated in private beaches. Smaller is sometimes better- Smaller resorts could be much better for you and also for the environment. Spanish Holiday Islands Enjoy Hot 2007 Tourist Summer Author: Dec 31

In the early summer months the outlook for many European holiday destinations wasn’t looking good, and hundreds of thousands of holidays were being heavily discounted to tempt Brits to take a holiday in Spain.


But British travel agents saw a sharp turnaround in their summer season fortunes, as people fed up with weeks of rain and the heaviest flooding in living memory ditched home holidays in favour of an overseas trip.


The top destination was Spain, with the Balearic islands of Menorca, and in particular Majorca, heading the list. The Spanish mainland’s Costa Blanca and Portugal’s Algarve were also popular choices for families wishing to get away from it all.


With a rush for the sun, low prices and good deals were becoming hard to come by, and many holidays were selling at full price, with some companies even being able to increase their original prices with demand so high.


The general advice seemed to be to get a low price holiday holidaymakers needed to be at a travel agents as soon as they opened as there were so few about, or to regularly check internet sites for holiday companies like Thomas Cook and Thomson Holidays in the hope that they might bag a bargain.


‘It was good news for the travel industry’, commented one Menorca travel guide, ‘it looked like there would be plenty of availability and prices would have to be slashed to lure people into a summer holiday abroad. But then with higher prices and strong demand hotels and the holiday industry in general benefitted from an unexpectedly good year.’


A spokesman for ABTA, the association of British travel agents, commented that April was so warm that everyone expected summer to be a scorcher and a lot of people decided not to go abroad. But then there was a rush to book a holiday.


The floods affected large parts of England and claimed four lives, and left a hundred thousand homes without water for two weeks in parts of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.


Insurance companies warned that the floods will ultimately cost small businesses millions, and insurers have been receiving tens of millions in claims from homeowners. The British government offered emergency aid to the worst affected areas to help with the cost of the clear-up. Yorkshire in the north of England saw some of the heaviest flooding, with thousands of homes left without power and three people dying.


The surge in holiday bookings came at a particularly opportune time for the three Balearic islands of Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza, who were doing better than many holiday areas before the British floods.


Clubbers from around Europe, and especially from the UK, descend upon Ibiza in the summer months for a week – and often two – of non stop partying.


Ibiza runs second only to the UK’s main cities of London, Manchester and Liverpool in terms of popularity for clubbers, and some of the Ibiza clubs are as well known as any in the UK.


The three Balearic Islands of Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza might be close to each other, but they are all different in character and the type of tourist they typically attract.


A surprise is that the amount of time spent on Ibiza by each tourist is longer than on Menorca and Majorca – destroying the myth that Ibiza is primarily for long weekends or short trips for a couple of nights in the club.


Recent findings by the Balearics Tourist Authority show that after Ibiza, Menorca visitors stay on average for 11 days, with Majorca just behind. And the same pattern emerges for spending per day, with Ibiza top, Majorca second, and Menorca last.


The amount spent by Ibiza tourists averaged 94 Euros a day – a huge contribution to the island’s economy, looked on enviously by Majorca and Menorca.
